My Favorite Places to Watch the Sunset in Santorini

When you think of sunset in Santorini, you probably think of Oia. More specifically, the Castle of Oia.

And yes, it is beautiful. But during the summer, especially in July and August, it can honestly feel a little like being at a very busy concert, shoulder to shoulder with thousands of strangers. Everyone is trying to get to the same place, at the same time, for the same photo.

So while I definitely think you should visit Oia, I wouldn’t necessarily choose the castle for sunset. There are so many other places around Santorini where you can enjoy it without fighting for a tiny spot on a wall.

Before I give you my favorites, though, there is something else you should know about Oia.

Staying in Oia doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll see the sunset from your hotel

This is something that surprises a lot of people.

You might book an amazing luxury hotel in Oia with a beautiful caldera view and still not have a direct view of the sunset.

That’s simply because of the geography of Oia. Many of the hotels are built into the cliff facing the caldera, and the cliff itself can block the sunset. The position of the sun also changes depending on the time of year.

There are some properties, particularly toward the edge of Oia, that are positioned in a way that gives them access to both the caldera and the sunset. But they are limited.

So if having sunset views from your room is important to you, always ask your hotel to confirm the view from your specific room or terrace before you book. Don’t assume that “caldera view” means “sunset view.”

Now, where would I actually go?

The Heart of Santorini

This is such a special little place.

The Heart of Santorini is close to Megalochori and you only need a short walk of around five minutes to reach it. There’s a naturally formed heart in the rock overlooking the sea, which is where the name comes from.

It’s simple, quiet and very romantic.

I especially like it for couples because it doesn’t feel like an organized sunset experience. You just walk down, find your spot and enjoy the view.

And, of course, it makes for a beautiful photo.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Akrotiri is another favorite of mine, and one of the places I recommend when someone wants something completely different from Oia.

It’s right at the southwestern end of the island, with a wide-open view of the Aegean.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the famous Oia sunset changes throughout the year because the position of the sun changes with the seasons. Akrotiri’s location gives you a much more open western view, so it’s a great sunset option throughout the year.

Go a little earlier, find a comfortable place on the rocks and stay until the sun disappears.

You don’t need anything else.

A Sunset Catamaran Cruise

If you’re coming to Santorini as a couple, I would definitely consider doing this at least once.

Watching the sunset from the sea is completely different because you get to look back at Santorini and see the cliffs from below.

There are plenty of sunset cruises available, but for a special occasion or a romantic trip, I would personally go for a private catamaran.

Yes, it costs more, but you’re not sharing the experience with a large group of people. You can swim, have your drinks and dinner on board and enjoy the sunset together.

The crews also take very good care of you, so you really don’t need to think about much. Just enjoy the afternoon and let them do the rest.

Pyrgos Castle

Pyrgos is one of my favorite villages in Santorini anyway, but it’s particularly beautiful around sunset.

Walk through the village and continue all the way up toward the old castle. Because Pyrgos is one of the highest points of the island, you get a completely different perspective from up there.

You can simply find your own little spot and watch the sunset, which is what I prefer.

Or, if you’d rather have a cocktail while you’re doing it, go to Franco’s Café.

Just make a reservation in advance, especially during high season. This isn’t somewhere I would arrive at sunset in August and hope for the best!

Dinner Along the Caldera

Another option is not to make sunset a separate activity at all.

Book dinner somewhere along the caldera for just before sunset and enjoy it from your table.

One of my personal favorites is Five Senses at Astra Suites in Imerovigli. Apart from the beautiful location, Five Senses was named the 12th of the 25 best restaurants of the world and Number 1 Fine Dining Restaurant in Greece in Tripadvisor’s 2025 and 2026 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards.

But it doesn’t necessarily have to be Five Senses. There are plenty of beautiful restaurants along the caldera, especially around Imerovigli and Firostefani.

My advice is simply to be very specific when you reserve: ask for a table with an unobstructed sunset view and book well in advance during the summer.

Sunset at your Own Private Terrace

This is probably my favorite option if you’re coming to Santorini for a romantic trip or honeymoon.

Don’t go anywhere.

Choose the right hotel and watch the sunset from your own terrace or private pool with a glass of wine.

Imerovigli is particularly good for this because of its position on the caldera. A beautiful luxury option is Andronis Concept Wellness Resort*, where several of the suites and villas have private infinity pools and sunset views.

It is definitely a splurge. But if there’s ever a place where having your own private terrace overlooking the Aegean feels worth it, Santorini is probably it.

And you don’t have to dress up, find parking or reserve a table. That’s also luxury in my book.

Venetsanos Winery

And finally, wine.

Because we’re in Santorini, after all.

Venetsanos Winery is near Megalochori, built directly into the cliff above Athinios port. The winery dates back to 1947 and has an incredible position overlooking the caldera.

You can come for a wine tasting and stay for sunset, which is a lovely way to combine two Santorini experiences without having to rush from one place to another.

They have a dedicated sunset terrace, and I would definitely recommend reserving in advance during high season.

Have a glass of Assyrtiko, order something small to eat and enjoy the view.

And what about Oia?

Go.

Oia is beautiful and you absolutely shouldn’t skip it just because it’s busy.

Walk around, explore the little streets, have lunch or dinner, visit the shops and enjoy the architecture.

I just don’t think you need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other people at the castle to say you’ve experienced a Santorini sunset.

There are quieter, more romantic and, in my opinion, much more memorable ways to do it.
